About the Book

The Rough Guide to Blogging is the ultimate reference for all things weblog. It takes you into the blogosphere, from blogging’s early history and where it is today, to the future of blogs and their social and cultural impact. This book will help you to discover the greatest blogs on the web and to understand newsreaders and RSS.

Whether you want to start your own blog or contribute to an existing one, this guide will teach you everything you’ll need to know. Chapters include: Creating a Blog, Blog Design, Advanced Blogging, Audio and Video, Podcasting, Blogging for Money, Corporate Blogging plus much, much more. Whether you’re an experienced blogger or just getting started, this is the right book for you.

The Long Story

Today I’m taking a little time away from my usual line of reading/reviewing (fiction) so I can review Jonathan Yang’s Rough Guide to Blogging.

I don’t consider myself someone new to blogging by any means, but that certainly doesn’t mean I know everything. With that in mind, I got this book to read in the hopes I would find out something new that I could hopefully apply to my personal blogging.

This guide is a great example of what a guide should be.

In this book, you are introduced to blogs and blogging by learning a bit of history about both. It also touches on podcasting and video blogging. If you have ever been interested in finding out the origins and basic statistics of blogging, I highly recommend the beginning of this book.

Yang introduces you to the world of blogging in a way that won’t overwhelm the beginner but also won’t bore the experienced blogger. Blogging jargon is explained in a way that doesn’t make the reader feel dumb or talked down to.

This book was published in 2006, so the information provided is both up to date and relevant to today’s blogger. It also points to many sites that can help you connect to other bloggers and sites that may be of interest to those who aren’t interested in blogging.

Not only does this book provide instructions and guidance, at the end is a 250 blog list of good examples of blogs arranged by niche/category. I have been looking through these blogs and I agree – they are the top 250 blogs.

The Short Story

I definitely recommend this book as a great resource for new and not-so-new bloggers.
